Data Security, Compliance, & Governance Working Together
Microsoft Purview is the backbone of data security and compliance in Microsoft 365. It’s how organizations answer the questions that matter most: Where is our sensitive data? Who can access it? Is it protected if it leaves our environment? And are we keeping or deleting what we’re required to?
This section breaks down the core Purview components, how they work together, and real configuration scenarios I’ve worked through myself.

What You’ll Find Here
Information Protection
Sensitivity Labels give you a consistent way to classify and protect content wherever it lives — files, emails, meetings, Teams content. Labels can apply encryption, access restrictions, and visual markings so protection travels with the data, not just the location.
Information Barriers
Sometimes the goal isn’t protecting data from leaving — it’s controlling who can even talk to whom. Information Barriers restrict communication and collaboration between groups to reduce conflicts of interest, limiting chat, calls, and file sharing across Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
Data Classification
Before you can protect data, you have to know where it lives. Data Classification helps you discover and understand sensitive data across your Microsoft 365 environment. Sensitive Information Types identify things like credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, or custom patterns using matching logic, keywords, confidence levels, and proximity signals.
